A Little Healthy Competition for Texas

All of our friends, patients and followers know that Dr. Pyron and the Medicine in Motion team are big advocates of healthy and active lifestyles. We don’t just preach it, though – we do our best to live it in our day-to-day lives. We run, stretch, lift weights, eat healthy, and generally do our best to keep the body moving in optimal condition. We’re fortunate to live in a city like Austin where so many people live an active lifestyle – it makes it much easier to be encouraged and inspired when your friends and neighbors take their health seriously. But it’s no secret than much of Texas and our entire country is facing healthcare issues that stem from lack of exercise. So when we heard about the IT’S TIME TEXAS Healthy at H-E-B Community Challenge, we were very excited!

The competition started in September and wraps up at the end of October, and was organized by our friends at ACTIVE Life (http://activelifehq.org), which is an Austin-based nonprofit. They set out a challenge for cities and communities of all sizes across Texas to see which ones could demonstrate the greatest commitment to health and fitness. There are currently 317 communities; 11,276 individuals; and 3,279 schools involved – very promising numbers! To learn more about the challenge and to check out some motivational videos, visit http://hebcommunitychallenge.com.

We’re very proud to say that the leaders of major cities have thrown their hats into the ring in support of this initiative. Mayors of Austin, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Lakeway, Missouri City, McKinney, Pflugerville, Round Rock, San Antonio, and 26 other cities have all accepted the challenge on behalf of their respective communities. Major employers such as H-E-B and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas have also jumped in with support.

Winners will be announced in three categories: large, mid-size and small communities. The current top cities are San Antonio, Round Rock and Pflugerville, respectively.
