Today we’re focusing on acupuncture and how to prepare for your appointment. There aren’t any strict rules for acupuncture, but it’s important to remember that the treatment gets things moving, which may cause your body to react a little differently than normal. So be good to yourself after the appointment with these tips:
1. Rest. Take things easy – don’t overdo stress or strain to your body. If you’re able to nap or get to bed early that evening, you’ll allow the physical and emotional restoration that began with acupuncture to continue.
2. Light exercise. While exercise is fine, it’s best to keep it at light and gradual movements. For example, if you’re a runner, stick to walking on the day of your treatment.
3. Heat. If you’re receiving acupuncture treatment for pain, using heat is almost always the answer. Acupuncture restores flow to the body, which can help eliminate blockages that lead to pain. Heat helps in the same manner.
4. Avoid coffee and alcohol. Your body needs to stay hydrated after acupuncture, and both coffee and alcohol can lead to dehydration. In addition, these substances also confuse bodily awareness, which is counterproductive to one of the main goals of acupuncture – greater clarity and awareness.
5. No TV/Computer. After acupuncture the mind should be clearer and calmer. Introducing television or the internet to your system immediately after treatment will almost immediately eliminate your state of acu-bliss.
6. Eat smart. A great benefit of acupuncture is that it helps bring out toxins. Poor quality foods that are fried, fat-heavy, sugary and/or processed push toxins back into your system. Choose foods that will make you feel healthy and nourished, and let the healing continue long after your appointment.
