Austin Sports Medicine: Artificial Sweeteners

It’s time for another Austin Sports Medicine 101 class!

When you have a craving for something sweet, your instinct might be to reach for an artificial sweetener. But wait! Today we’re talking about three common artificial sweeteners:

  • Aspartame
  • Saccharin, and
  • Sucralose

We’ve got our recommendation for the best way to get that sweet fix without adding calories.

  1. Aspartame, which is found in Equal and NutraSweet is 200 times sweeter than natural sugar! Though it is calorie-free, research has linked it with migraines in some people.
  2. Saccharin, found in Sweet’N Low is 500 times sweeter than sugar! It’s also calorie-free, but research has actually linked it to more weight gain due to the secondary effects of craving more sweets.
  3. Sucralose, otherwise known as Splenda, is 600 times sweeter than sugar! Like the others, it’s calorie-free. Sucralose is made by adding chlorine to sugar molecules. It’s been linked to increased stomach sensitivity and headaches.

So which do we recommend? NO artificial sweetener at all! But if you must sweeten your food, use small amounts of something real, like honey. Though real sweeteners have calories, using them in moderation is better for you than the chemical cocktail that is artificial sweeteners.
