Austin Sports Medicine: Brain Foods, Part 3

It’s time for another Austin Sports Medicine 101 class!

Today is the third in our series of four brain foods that will help keep the mind sharp. The saying goes – you are what you eat. And never is that more true than when it concerns your mental well-being.

Drink your water!

I know you know this, but do you actually do it? Sometimes it helps to know the why. Staying hydrated keeps your brain functioning properly. Studies have shown that NOT drinking enough water can reduce oxygen flow to the brain and temporarily shrink neurons (otherwise known as brain cells!).

Not only that, but researchers at the University of East London found that in six and seven-year-old children the differences between those who drank enough water and those who didn’t were significant. They also found that cognitive performance increases by the simple act of drinking more water.

Those are very real and important facts about water. So remember, improper hydration will affect your brain. So drink up!
