Austin Sports Medicine: Fat and Energy for Sports

It’s time for another Austin Sports Medicine 101 class!

Over the last couple of blogs, we’ve taken a closer look at the types of fats and their pros and cons. Today we’re learning about one of the biggest benefits of fat – providing energy for athletes. Here are the fat facts:

  • Compared to proteins and carbs, fat delivers the highest concentration of energy
  • Humans have a theoretically unlimited storage capacity for fat
  • 1 gram of fat = 9 calories, which is a high calorie density
  • The combination of our fat storage capacity and fat’s high calorie density makes fat our largest reserve of energy
  • 1lb of fat provides about 3,600 calories of energy
  • Fat calories are better for athletes performing slower lower intensity and endurance activities like cycling and walking
  • It is the chief fuel component for endurance sports like marathons
  • For high intensity activities that utilize carbs as the chief fuel component, fat is still required to help access stored glycogen
