Austin Sports Medicine: Good Fats

It’s time for another Austin Sports Medicine 101 lesson!

You know there’s good fat and bad fat. You know your body needs the good fat. But let’s dig a little deeper and talk about specific good fats you should get to know.

Let me introduce you to my friends MUFA and PUFA, who you should bring home for dinner ASAP! MUFA is monounsaturated fatty acids, and PUFA is polyunsaturated fatty acids. They’re both liquid at room temperature.

You’ll mostly find MUFAs in olives, olive oil, peanuts, pecans, almonds, hazel nuts, avocados, and so on. PUFAs are primarily in oils like sunflower oil, safflower oil and even nuts. Studies show that eating foods rich in these types of fats improves blood cholesterol, which can decrease your risk of heart disease. They may be helpful in combating Type 2 diabetes, as well, by keeping blood sugar levels under control.

Remember, knowing your MUFAs and PUFAs is great, but adding them to your diet is the best!
