Austin Sports Medicine: Healthier Halloween

It’s time for another Austin Sports Medicine 101 class!

Halloween is an important night on the kid calendar, because it’s one of the few times that adults not only allow kids to eat candy, but they seem to encourage it! But it can leave parents in quite the bind, because on the one hand, they want their kids to have fun, but on the other, haven’t they been preaching healthy habits every other day of the year?

If you’re brave enough to pass out healthy treats on Halloween, all the power to you! And there are ways to make treats healthier without becoming the family who gives out bricks of tofu. Try packets of instant cocoa mix, a box of raisins, graham crackers, air popped popcorn, a simple trail mix, or natural fruit snacks.

If you do plan on going the traditional route, at least choose some of the lower-calorie, smaller candy options — a couple Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Kisses, a Charm’s Blow Pop, two mini Reese’s peanut butter cups, snack size Junior Mints. Each of these has fewer than 80 calories and might save your house from the wrath of the unhappy neighborhood children.
