Austin Sports Medicine: Immunity Foods, Part 1

It’s time for another Austin Sports Medicine 101 class!

When getting sick is not an option, the best solution is to keep your immune system in tiptop shape. Today is the first in our series of five foods that will give your immunity a boost.

Pumpkins and sweet potatoes are more than just decorations and holiday treats. They’re great for your immune system.

That sweet orange flesh is rich in beta carotene, a nutrient that your body converts to Vitamin A. The benefit of Vitamin A is that it helps cells communicate with one another, an essential function to help your immune system work properly.

It’s all about that orange color. The more intense orange, the higher the levels of beta carotene.

Remember your first defense against sickness is keeping your immune system in shape. Putting more pumpkins and sweet potatoes on the menu may help you stave on illness all winter long.
