It’s time for another Austin Sports Medicine 101 class!
Let’s take a poll. How many of you eat meals in front of your TV or computer? A lot of you, right — me included sometimes! Wait. How many of you are eating right now, while you’re reading this? Well, pause, go finish your meal, and come back when you’re done! I’ll meet you here to explain.
Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has revealed that people who eat while using their computer consume twice as much! In the study, the participants also were less likely to remember how much they’d eaten and were more likely to continue eating excessively throughout the day. It makes sense.
We say it all the time: You eat with your eyes first. If you pay attention to your meal, seeing the amount you’ve eaten will help inform your body when you’ve had enough, and you’ll enjoy the food more. So remember: Be alert and pay attention while you’re eating. Separate mealtime from media time and you’re more likely to stop when you’re actually satisfied and avoid overeating.
