It’s time for another Austin Sports Medicine 101 class!
The hormone cortisol, which is released in response to stress, is at elevated levels about a half hour after you wake up. Doctors call this the Cortisol Awakening Response, and researchers hypothesize that it’s likely due to your anticipating the stressful day ahead.
One solution is to, well, just stop anticipating the stressful day ahead. Yeah, right! But a more realistic solution is to get a little bit ahead of that stress by doing some basic calming or focusing activities in the morning. Yoga, meditation, a quick jog – whatever it takes to get you calm, focused and centered.
Everyone’s different, so experiment to see what works best for you. I promise, you will find something. It doesn’t take much. If you’re pressed for time – and who isn’t? – do as much as you can. As little as five minutes of any of your things will help bring your stress levels back into balance. So remember: Getting focused first thing in the morning is the key to stressing less!
