Austin Sports Medicine: Tryptophan Truths

It’s time for another Austin Sports Medicine 101 class!

It’s hard to believe the holidays are once again upon us. It’s the time of year when we revisit old traditions, including holiday meals. Every family has their favorite Thanksgiving foods, but for many of us, it’s hard to imagine Thanksgiving without the turkey. And with that turkey comes Tryptophan! The Tryptophan in turkey, combined with a meal rich in carbohydrates, can make even the most energetic among us feel sleepy after a heavy Thanksgiving meal.

It is also used as a supplement for those who are having trouble sleeping, have sleep apnea, or a mood disorder. Tryptophan can, therefore, interfere with other medications used for depression and anxiety, so be careful if used together. There is not a clearly defined recommended dose of tryptophan for sleep or moods disorders; so while you’re free to enjoy a big turkey dinner, you should consult your pharmacist if you are considering taking tryptophan as a supplement.
