It’s summer time in Texas, and even the uninitiated know what that means – lots of heat. High temperatures aren’t likely to slow many Austinites down, though, since Austin is a city filled with sports and health enthusiasts. Regular workouts and outdoor activities are part of many of our lives, but during the dog days of summer, it’s a good idea to understand the challenges our bodies may face due to our environment.

Heat cramps are a fairly common occurrence during this time of year among athletes after pushing their bodies for several hours. This over exertion usually leads to excessive sweating, which then can lead to dehydration and then finally heat cramps.

Heat cramps are spasms in the muscles (often the abdomen, arms and legs) and can be very painful. Muscle cramps are just one symptom, however. Other warning signs could include feeling faint, weak or dizzy, and also extreme sweating.
