Austin Sports Medicine: What is Sports Medicine Acupuncture?

It’s time for another Austin Sports Medicine 101 class!

Sports medicine is a broad branch of health care that is used by a variety of health care professionals including physical therapists, personal trainers, massage therapists, dieticians/nutritionists, chiropractors, surgeons, acupuncturists and more. While each discipline approaches sports medicine from a different angle, they all have the same goal of rehabilitating an injured athlete back to full health and mobility. Sports medicine acupuncture is an excellent resource for athletes whether young or old, professional or amateur. While most of us know that acupuncture is a Chinese medical practice that treats illness or provides local anesthesia by inserting needles at specified sites of the body, we’re giving you a few facts specific to sports medicine acupuncture:

  • It involves both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and sports medicine diagnostic techniques to view the patient’s injury.
  • The goal is to accurately assess the mechanism and severity of the patient’s musculoskeletal complaint.
  • Assessment is handled by using a combination of orthopedic special tests, range of motion, manual muscle testing and palpation to identify the injured tissue.
  • Assessment techniques used are combined with TCM differential diagnosis, providing an evaluation of the athlete’s local injury and overall health.
  • The objective is to address the athlete’s healing potential thereby strengthening the patient and decreasing injury rehabilitation time.
  • Goals include returning the athlete back to their activity of choice, enhancing performance and preventing re-injury through treatment and education.
