Sports Injuries in Austin: Dehydration Symptoms

It’s time for another Austin-area family medicine 101 class!

“Dehydration occurs when there are inadequate amounts of fluid in the body,” explained Dr. Martha Pyron, owner of Medicine in Motion. “While athletes are highly prone to losing essential bodily fluids due to increased sweating during physical activities, it can affect anyone. When a person has lost more than two percent of their body weight during activity, they are considered to be dehydrated.”

Dehydration symptoms may include:

  • Sticky or dry mouth
  • Significantly reduced urine output
  • Urine that is dark in color
  • Inability to produce tears
  • Weak or dizzy feelings
  • Skin doesn’t retake its shape immediately after being pinched
