PRIDE is about feeling good about yourself, feeling good about your community, standing up for what is right, and celebrating the joy surrounding PRIDE.  In particular PRIDE month refers to the LGBTQA community.

But when are all the celebrations in Austin?  Well, that’s complicated.  There are three time periods to pay attention to.

1. PRIDE month is recognized in June for most parts of the world.  This month was chosen to commemorate Stonewall, an historic event that occurred on June 28th, 1969.  At Stonewall, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay nightclub, and hauled away patrons and workers.  During this time period being homosexual was illegal as was dressing as another gender, holding hands, or kissing and dancing with a same sex partner. It was also illegal to serve alcohol to gays and lesbians. However, the laws were starting to change.  In the midst of this change, and on that early morning in June, the bar patrons of the Stonewall Inn and neighboring community responded to the police raid with riots that lasted 6 days.  This event is known as the Stonewall Riots or Stonewall Uprising and prompted the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. But …… Austin doesn’t hold the PRIDE celebration in June????

2. What about October?  Gay and Lesbian History Month is in October and national coming out day is on Oct 11th.  But that is not PRIDE month for Austin.

3. PRIDE in Austin, is celebrated in August.  During this month, there are parades, parties, festivities and celebrations across town.  The community vows to have 2021 continue the tradition even if according to new Covid standards.   Please visit austinpride.org for more info.

Please join us in celebrating the diversity of the human race.  Please be welcoming to those who walk a different walk than yours, and please help those in need.

Who exactly is in need?

Well, there are some medically significant needs of the Queer community.  According to the National Institute of Health, the LGBT youth are at higher risk for substance use, sexually transmitted infections, cancers, cardiovascular disease, obesity, bullying, isolation, rejection, anxiety, depression and suicide as compared to the general population.

Health Care Disparities Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and …

In celebration of the PRIDE month of June, and later in August, please consider donating to: Austin Out Youth: https://www.outyouth.org OR The Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce https://austinlgbtchamber.com. Your donation would go towards services for those in need.
